AUSTIN STRAUB
(he/they) is an Emmy®-winning cinematographer and Los Angeles-based member of IATSE local 600. Austin’s work spans the gamut of the industry – from theatrical feature films, to television documentary series on APPLE TV, DISNEY+ and PBS, to commercial productions for brands like TARGET, SONY PLAYSTATION, FOUR SEASONS HOTELS, CHIPOTLE and LA MARZOCCO. Austin is frequently tapped as a handheld camera operator on cinematic multicam concert films for APPLE MUSIC, AMAZON MUSIC and HBO — and their still photography has been featured on the front page of The Los Angeles Times. They thrive in intimate, human stories bathed in naturalistic light, where the camera is just as much a part of the scene as the characters.
They recently shot and produced the feature length documentary Out of Plain Sight which premiered at DOCNYC in late 2024, and has since won the Audience Award at Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the Shared Earth Foundation Award at the Environmental Film Festival in The Nation’s Capital, the Best Feature Award at the International Wildlife Film Festival, the Audience Award + an Honorable Mention by the jury at Berkshire International Film Festival, a Special Jury Award at Mendocino Film Festival, and the prestigious Jackson Wild Media Award for Best Investigative Feature.
Austin is passionate about demystifying the “intangibles” of image aesthetic and believes that the latest generation of digital capture devices opens up a new playground to become look authors rather than look shoppers (the work and research of Steve Yedlin, ASC being a big influence).
When he’s not behind the camera, you’ll probably find him above 10,000 feet in the Eastern Sierra backcountry, or scheming up the next passion project with his brother and close collaborator Daniel Straub.
